Beast-Folk

Vide

Many races of beast folk exist that have differences between the sexes, yet only the Vide have three with massive physical differences. The Vide language, Cerv, only uses gendered language during special occasions, most frequently the weeks following midsummer Rugire lo Effeto festival, AKA the war of love. The three Vide sexes are: The Doe, who are the lightest and most agile with prehensile downward facing tusks. The Stags, who sport wide spiked antlers and a fast running gait. The Moroe, the largest of the three who have a forced hunched posture that allows them to deliver a deadly shove with their heavy ramming antlers. These antlers and tusks are created from a cancerous mutation which first appears as early as seven years old. A Vide's first pair of antlers is more often than not small and imperfect, often being unbalanced in size and form. But despite this after they shed them each year these sheds are kept by the Vide's family as a good luck charm.

ll Vide have six limbs, the four of them that make contact with the ground are long and powerful with hard hooves. The other two on the upper half of the body have hands with three fingers and a thumb. Being ruminant mammals they have sloped triangular faces with dull square teeth and eyes on the sides of their heads as well as large ears that are keen to danger. These herbivores have historically spent much of the day eating to keep their large bodies fueled. But as they came to grow food for themselves instead of foraging, eating has been relegated to six smaller meals throughout the day. Despite this dependance on crops the Vide still retain their natural adaptability and can survive months on a diet of only twigs and water.

As a society the Vide hold collectivist ideals, and quickly in the early years of civilisation united into one great herd. This herd would eventually become The Republic of Buckan, a militaristic country that rules a great landmass in the name of peace and preservation. While it was easy to unite, it was never easy to agree. Before the current age where the people seek to rise above being mere prey, the Vide once sought to protect natural order. Many followed Zol, the god of the hunt. All Vide feared it's dominion, hoping that upholding the laws of kill or be killed would spare them from judgement. But the hunters that chased them were unaffected by their prayers, and Zol did nothing but fuel predators that did not even worship it.  Feeling slighted, a new hunt came to be. A band of Vide marched to the sacred grove of the god Zol and killed their maker. Their coats were not only soaked with blood, but the entire grove became flooded where Zol fell as it's eternal body would not cease bleeding to this day. In it's place The Red Militia came to be known as new gods, each of them a symbol of a new era where the Vide would strike first.

In the year R-2-85 the Vide fought those that hunted them. They attached Lecha foraging parties and fled before their warriors could react. For over a decade the two people fought but the half-hearted skirmishes saw no achievements for either side. A peace treaty was drafted by a group of Lecha and Vide that abstained from the battles, this agreement first gave the people of Firnus a definition for what constituted a Beast and marked that any beasts could not be legally hunted or exploited. They came to call this the Treaty of the Fang and offered it towards any nation that agreed to it's terms in exchange for trade of goods, services, travel, and knowledge.

This treaty has resulted in a strong bond between the Lecha and Vide and has even seen Vide included in the complex familial structure of the Vide. A family of Vide can have any number of adults that gather either to couple or hold strong bonds of friendship, and any children regardless of blood relation are taken care of by the group with a strong emphasis on independence from a young age. Because of this children may choose to live in a different family than their birth parent's, or even join a maverick as an apprentice.
